Boxplots were constructed using values obtained for each of the 11 nuclear loci (Additional files 7, 10) and represent divergence (top row) and polymorphism (bottom) at non-synonymoys sites (left; KA, πA), synonymous sites (middle; KS, πS) and their ratio (right; KA/KS, πA/πS). Estimates were obtained for: P. berghei (b); P. chabaudi (c); P. c. chabaudi (cc); P. vinckei (v); P. v. petteri (vp); P. v. subsp. (vsp); P. yoelii (y); P. y. yoelii (yy).
