Community based tagging

I feel that this is a timely commentary, addressing the issue of semantic enrichment of our scientific literature. One emerging online trend is the phenomenon of community based tagging (sometimes called folksonomies). The idea is that everyone in the community (i.e. not only authors, but readers) have the opportunity to tag (classify) each article with key words. This idea was popularized by the community book-marking site delicious:
